King Kamehmeha the Great

King Kamehameha Day

The ruler that united all the Hawaiian Islands celebrates his birthday this weekend! It’s a four-day work week for many in Hawaii, using that extra day off to celebrate the life of Hawaii’s greatest king. Ruling in the 18th century, it’s unknown exactly when Kamehameha the Great’s birthday fell, which might work out great for him since he gets a whole weekend of celebrating across the islands.

His statue draped in leis, parade processions in his honor; the King is even celebrated in Washington, DC every year.

Read more about King Kamehameha I—his rule, his many statues and his dozen wives.
