Eddie Would Go

Eddie Aikau was well-known for his surfing and lifeguard skills. In 1968 he was the first lifeguard appointed by the City and County of Honolulu at Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore, where he saved over 500 lives. He was known to brave big waves both as a lifeguard and avid surfer.

In 1978, Eddie Aikau was among a handful selected to join the second cultural expedition to Tahiti aboard Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea. The Hokulea was built to revive traditional Hawaiian long-range canoeing and was first launched in 1976 where it made a successful voyage to Tahiti.

On their second voyage, without modern equipment or escort, the Hokulea encountered treacherous seas off the island of Molokai and capsized, on a dark and stormy night in 1978. Dole Plantation's Family Fun Day

Dole Plantation invites the public to attend its annual Family Fun Day on March 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event features live musical performances, hula, arts and crafts, prize giveaways and more.

The Family Fun Day is well-known for the Central-area community groups and schools that join Dole Plantation as part of the “pineapple experience”. Students and teachers from area public schools will run keiki (kids) games, food booths and other activities at a nominal fee as fundraisers for their programs.

Enjoy a refreshing touch of the Mediterranean with this diced salad that Uncle Botsy first learned about from Israeli friend Lulik Hadar. The crunch and refreshing flavors go well with curry dishes, barbecued meats, lamb chops and even a platter of cold cuts and cheese. Combine all ingredients and chill at least one hour before serving. Occasionally, we substitute bottled Caesar salad dressing in place of the oil and vinegar. Best enjoyed at dinner with a sunset overlooking the water.
